I wonder what the weather is.

For the final Action Project of the Water unit in my STEAM class we talked about how water causes weather. We went over sun radiation and its effects as well as climate change. Our Field Experience of this unit was going to the Field Museum in Chicago. The exhibit we were focused on was concentrating on water in art. Most of these photos were from the Jardine Water Treatment Plant and since we had visited there it was cool to see what we saw turn into a nice photo. From there we talked about global warming and climate change with one of the scientists working there. We then began to work on the final project which was a slideshow talking about the average weather and climate of a city of our choice. The city I chose was Wroclaw which is in Poland. In this slideshow we were asked to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius or vice versa. I also showed different effects of climate change and their impact on Wroclaw and Poland. What if I did Not Have Access to Food?

The final weeks of the first term were very brief. What seemed like so much to do in little time. This unit of Sustainable Development Goals was focusing on sustainable development. Sustainable development is very important when it comes to building cities, providing for people, and supporting energy for everyone. The definition I made for sustainable development is,  the growth of communities and societies where our natural resources are not destroyed. One assignment during this unit was to interview three people about sustainable development and why they thought it was possible or why not. From the interviews I conducted I found that sustainable development is possible but not soon. For this to happen people need to work together and look out for each other. Everyone must be on the same page because only a few people trying to create this cannot succeed without the support of the entire community. After this work we began to combine what we learned and create our final project. T...

Would You Drink This?

In my STEAM, Water class we, as a class, mainly focused on filtration. In class we built our own small, sort of knockoff water filters. This included using plastic cups and coffee filters or using sand to relate to groundwater filtration. We learned about the pH of the water which shows whether the water is alkaline (basic) or acidic. This branched out to working on logarithms which we learned are the inverse of exponents. By working with logarithms I discovered how that and pH are so closely related. You can use the pH to find how many hydrogen plus ions there are in the water or its concentration. By doing the reverse, you know the concentration and are trying to solve for the pH. Since we talked about hydrogen ions we had to recover chemistry. Our field experience of this part of the unit was adventuring to the Jardine Water Filtration plant in Chicago. In our tour of the plant, the workers extract water from Lake Michigan, filter it, and that is then transported across the networ...

Equal Representation in Athletics

Equal Representation In Sports In our second unit of our SDGs or Sustainable Development Goals class we started talking about gender equality. At the start we mainly talked about the United States, being the country we live in, and discussed the gender pay gap. That led on to our Field Experiences like going to the Center on Halsted in Chicago. This center is a place or comfort for all people no matter their sex, race, or otherwise. It specialized in helping the LGBT community and additionally helped people in need. We found out that they are also helping people that need housing and helping them with finding jobs and being able to live their lives. We then began to think of gender representation in the other countries and the media. We talked about Burka Avenger which was about a teacher who uses pens and books as weapons to fight against the evil of unequal rights for women. We also watched the documentary, Miss Representation and had discussions about that. Still thinking of oth...

Food, a Human Right?

In our Humanities or SDGs class, Sustainable Development Goals, we were talking about the certain goals that could be thought of as a need to be a human right. The options were no poverty, no hunger, and quality education. The goal that I chose was number two, no hunger. I believe that food should be a human right because it is primarily a basic need. We need food to survive and if we do not have it we will obviously die, since that is the only alternative. Before then we went on a field experience to Lincoln Park Community Services in Chicago. There we experienced people who are hungry and we also as a class, cooked for the people that attended the lunch. I personally enjoyed this because I was able to talk with people that needed food and they were really appreciative of the food that they had been given. This led to the action project which is an essay about our chosen goal. The essay is below. To, Hiu, LPCS 2019, One of the food items cooked was chicken. Could you imagine...

Each Step Is Worth It

Each Step is Worth It      In our freshman STEAM class, our first unit was water. The curriculum of our school focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and water is goal six. But for the first couple of weeks it was not mainly focused on water itself. A lot of different pieces led up to starting the water class. We went over math, proportions, percents, and conversions. This was to help us get back into the flow of school and also begin to think of how this relates to water. Some of the problems that we did were examples of bodies of water. It could be how turning the amount of water from a river in China a percentage of water in China. We also talked about countries that have lack of access to water resources and good sanitation. Not only is it in third world countries but also in the most prosperous ones like the United States. Stepping aside from the math aspect of it, we started to cover basic water facts. How much water is there on Earth and w...

The Commutative Property of Addition

In our algebra class, we as a class, created the guidelines to give our own presentation about one mathematical property of our choice. I chose the Commutative Property of Addition. This presentation required two different mediums while having the decision of three. These mediums were, image, sound, and video. For my project I chose to use image and sound. For my image, I drew an example of the property I picked and for my audio, I recorded myself while giving the presentation. With these two mediums, I can give a proper explanation and show my understanding of the Commutative Property of Addition.      My first medium explaining the Commutative Property of Addition is image. For this medium I drew two pictures giving a brief example of the property I chose. In this first drawing there is a purple ball at the top of the stairs and a red ball at the bottom. There are still two balls in total. Just because they are separated from each other does not ...
