The USS Hermit, A Ship to the Future

Hello, this is my Action Project for the class Redesign the Future. In this class we have covered climate change, Bill Gates' 5 Grand Challenges to tackling climate change, circular economy, systems thinking, and some of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this unit we went to The Plant Chicago where we learned about aquaponics, The Hive which talked about bees and their struggle against climate change, Friends of the Chicago River that taught us about our river and its history, Rheaply which showed us their company and an insider view of circular economy, and the Lincoln Park Zoo which told us about select ecosystems and habitats for their animals of all kinds. This unit went very in depth on the concept of systems thinking. We talked about certain actions that were made to solve problems such as the malaria in Borneo but the unintended consequences that followed and how to solve them. This AP is about a design that follows one of the 5 grand challenges and also how can you solve the grand challenges. I decided to pursue Agriculture and my design was a self sustaining boat that had farms and water purification so people can live on the boat. There is also renewable energy sources for power. While building my prototype I realized that my original idea of this being on a cruise boat could be tough so I switched to a repurposed cargo ship or freighter.

Below is a slideshow of all the work collected from this unit and class.

I enjoyed this project because it was fun to build the prototypes. I also liked going on all the Field Experiences because some of them changed how my design worked and how I thought out my idea. I am proud of my prototype because it was a big build and I managed to finish everything I wanted to in time along with a few extra details. I think the most difficult thing during this unit was my systems map. It took me quite awhile to write things down and think of ideas on what I would include in the map. Because I was already thinking big on the transformed boat idea it was a little tough to imagine close to every little detail. I overcame this by taking a break from it and listing what I wanted to include in the design. From this I could easily look back to the layout and items that I would need and how that would fit into the systems map. Eventually after moving some things around I managed to get the map done and it looked great. I had included everything I could think of that would need to be laid out for this portion of the project to be complete.

United States Refugees: What must they go through?

Welcome back to my blog. This post is for the workshop class, The War on X. The War on X is a new elective class at GCE this Fall term that focuses on current events that their own small battles and large levels of importance. Some topics that were up for discussion were the War on Afghanistan, the War on Immigration, and Critical Race Theory. For this first unit the majority of the class decided to talk about the War on Immigration. More specifically we focused on the United States-Mexico border and the situation there. We looked into the history of a border and eventually wall being at the border in the first place and moved on to examine more recent events from the presidency of Donald Trump. We also looked at the entry process for immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees to enter the United States. In this small Action Project we were asked to choose one of the three groups trying to enter the US and look at their entrance process further. I chose to study refugees more because the...

Snapshots of Memories

For Final Presentations this term I am presenting the GCE Minecraft server. The GCE Minecraft server is a multiplayer world on Minecraft where me and a fellow freshman have built GCE. Since we were not able to conclude our school year at GCE and it being the last year at the current location, we decided to make a replica in Minecraft. During the terms pre-apocalypse a few GCE students took interest in creating multiplayer Minecraft worlds like surviving as a group to beat the game and even building a massive city. As we moved through the weeks after GCE closed its doors the students continued to play and collaborate with each other. One of these students came up with the idea of building GCE. I agreed to do it because I have a passion for Minecraft and have become an architect on it just like the creators that I take inspiration from. When there is something you enjoy, do more of it. So, in the mindset of the Final Presentations for this term and having a little bit of fun we sta...

How To Make A Dreamcatcher

This is the second and final Action Project in the units of the Who Am I class in the Humanities Course. This unit was called Doubt and Dream. For a decent amount of this unit we talked a lot about our dreams and what they mean. We talked more about philosophy and psychology like Continental Rationalists or British Empiricists and the Freudian analysis. There were a few Field Experiences that we embarked on such as the Continuum Center, The Art Institute, and also Cheetah Gym where we learned about the philosophy of jujitsu. This final action project was about making a dreamcatcher and explaining what it symbolizes and what it means to us. Everyone's dreamcatcher was different because it is made to represent you and everyone is different. The materials we used for the dreamcatchers were lace, string, wires, and beads. My dreamcatcher and everything about it is below. GHS, 2020 The center of my dream catcher symbolizes remembrance and acceptance of death. We all know that we...
